My dear Secretary of State,

You wrote to me on the 85th Jane regarding

the possibility of our surrendering Murray Barracks at Hong Kong as quickly as possible in order that the site

might be available for the creation of a new Town Hall

and Huseam with which Sir Paul Chater is closely

associated.

I do not think that there is any possibility

of our evacuating Murray Barracks in the near future.

In the first place we have not yet received Treasury

approval to the scheme as a whole, although this should

be forthcoming very shortly.

Secondly after the receipt of approval there is a great deal to be done in the way of designing and

construction of the proposed barracks at Gan Club Hill.

1 do not think there is any likelihood of our being able

to evacuate Kurray Barracks before some three years from

Under the arrangement reprovision, which is a

now.
